Welcome!

On behalf of the Space Science and Astrobiology Division of NASA Ames Research Center, and the Planetary Science Division (PSD) of NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD), we would like to cordially invite your open participation in a planning and purposes workshop for the establishment of a Mars Climate Modeling Center (MCMC) at the NASA Ames Research Center (ARC), Moffett Field, California. The dates of the MCMC workshop will be 30 September through 2 October 2008.

The main theme of the workshop is to openly discuss the needs of the Agency regarding a national center for Mars climate modeling and research in support of its Mars Exploration Program (MEP); and further, to establish an efficient resource for the Mars science and mission engineering communities.

Some goals of the MCMC workshop include:

  • Determine the requirements of the community
  • Determine the range of climate models to be supported
    through the MCMC
  • Determine the architecture of the MCMC
  • Determine the desired products and deliverables
  • Determine the high-end computing (HEC) requirements
    for the MCMC
  • Determine the appropriate web-based interface

We wish to encourage participation in the MCMC workshop from
(a) Mars atmospheric and climate scientists; (b) Mars mission, engineering and support personnel; (c) NASA HEC and NAS members; and, (d) others broadly interested in Mars climate research.

The key outcome of the workshop will be to formulate a "White Paper" on the operational plan for a MCMC that will meet the Agency needs and the science community goals. This White Paper will be submitted to NASA after the conclusion of the workshop in a timely manner.

There will be no registration fee for attendees of the MCMC Workshop. In addition, to assist workshop participants in need, some travel support is available.

Please use this website for further background and details on the workshop; to view a list of keynote and invited speakers; to register for the workshop and locate lodging options and points of interests related to the Ames Research Center and the South San Francisco Bay Area, etc. Please visit this website frequently as it will be updated with read-ahead material to prepare participants for the workshop.

We sincerely hope you will be able to attend and participate in the MCMC workshop at NASA Ames Research Center this autumn.

Please feel free to forward this website URL to your colleagues and other collaborators at your institution who may also be interested in
this workshop.
